Severn Trent Services Selected to Supply TETRA® LP Block™ Filter Underdrain System for Water Treatment Plant in Australia
Severn Trent Services has been awarded a contract to supply its TETRA® LP Block™ filter underdrain system for the Mundaring Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in the Perth area of Australia. The project is the first public-private partnership water project of its kind in Western Australia. The plant will have an initial capacity of 165 million l/day (43.5 million gal/day) and a maximum capacity of 240 million l/day (63.4 million gal/day). Construction on the project began in the second half of 2011, and the plant is scheduled to commence operations in July 2013.
The contract for the filter underdrain system was awarded by the Helena Water consortium, which comprises ACCIONA Agua, United Utilities Australia, Brookfield Multiplex and Royal Bank of Scotland. Helena Water is designing and building the facility and will operate the plant for its owner, Water Corporation, the principal supplier of water, wastewater and drainage services in Western Australia.
Marwan Nesicolaci, vice president of international business development and sales for Severn Trent Services, said, “The TETRA LP Blocks have become popular with plant owners throughout the world for their low profile, low headloss, lightweight construction and easy installation. They are easy to assemble and ensure superior distribution of both air and water for effective backwash, exceptional installation strength and maintenance-free life.”
The TETRA LP Block is a dual parallel lateral underdrain system constructed from HDPE moulded plastic blocks that provide effective distribution of both air and water for either concurrent or sequential backwashing. The system’s lightweight construction and easy assembly and installation make it ideal for both new and retrofit filter underdrain applications. Its nozzle-less design ensures there are no blockages that could potentially affect the performance of the filter.
The TETRA underdrain filters feature the patented Grout Grip™ design, which increases resistance to uplift from the filter floor and offers twice the pullout strength of a conventional underdrain filter block. Additionally, the wide, low-profile design requires that fewer blocks be installed to cover a filter floor, so fewer joints and less grout are needed. The system also features the TETRA FlumeFlow™, a backwash air and water distribution system that works in tandem with the TETRA LP Block design to offer savings in capital costs.
